TOADD Onlus – Together for a better future for the Scuolina di Addis
Unfortunately, as reported earlier, the land where our beloved Addis School was located has been expropriated for a new infrastructure project. The area will be used for the expansion of a roadway and the construction of a new national government center. The expropriation, which has now reached its final stage, involved the entire area where the School was built.
The structures, which were developed over the years with significant economic and human effort, have been completely demolished. Sadly, the kitchen, the dormitory, the classrooms, the bathrooms, and the guard’s room no longer exist. Fortunately, thanks to the dedication of the school staff and the children’s mothers, we were able to save the furniture and educational materials, transferring them to an improvised storage area. However, all of this happened very quickly, without any prior notice.
This situation brings us great sadness, as we see the destruction of all the hard work done in recent years.
Despite the loss, there is a glimmer of hope: the old premises of the School, which were abandoned in the past, have been reopened. Today, our children can return to them, even though the old structure, designed for 80 children, is completely inadequate to accommodate more than 200.
Our teaching staff, led by Director Kaleb, is working miracles to cope with this difficulty, always putting the well-being and education of the children first. In the garden of the old school, temporary tents have been set up with makeshift classrooms, blackboards, and other materials to ensure that teaching can continue.
The School, though in precarious conditions, continues to thrive thanks to the courage and determination of everyone involved.
Now, as we await the completion of the expropriation works, our association is seeking a new plot of land to rebuild a School that can properly accommodate all of our children, providing them with a safe and stimulating space to grow.
We need your help.
Rebuilding the Addis School is an ambitious project that requires the commitment of everyone. Every contribution, big or small, will be essential in giving hope and a future to these children.
A first opportunity to support the rebirth of the School will take place in Rivoli Torinese during the weekend of November 30th and December 1st. Join us: your presence and support are crucial!

“Ethiopian Alphabet” is born from the desire of the author Marcella Catignani, a Sardinian teacher who has lived and taught in Addis Ababa for seven years, to make known some aspects of Ethiopia and to try to tell the story of an extraordinary country, where it is sometimes difficult to find one’s way around. To do so, she has resorted to the letters of the alphabet, which have somehow placed limits on the vastness of the subject, forcing her to focus on certain points, and has interspersed the different “voices” with short third-person stories.
The presentation will be held in Turin, accompanied by an aperitif dinner. The proceeds will be donated to the association ToAdd onlus.
the Addis Ababa Municipal Administration, which owns the land on which the “Scuolina di Addis” is located, has decided in recent months to partially expropriate the space it has been allocated for years. The reason is the project of a large, multi-lane road communication route, the construction of which began some time ago. As an association, we have made a request to the authorities to make explicit the timing, manner and possible alternatives to expropriation. Times and ways were never clearly communicated and, unfortunately, the expropriation was suddenly accelerated. The result is what can be seen in the pictures below; the partial destruction of buildings and premises where activities were taking place.
Therefore, in order to be able to continue school activities and support the families of schoolchildren, some temporary structures will be completed so as to ensure what is possible. As soon as the municipality’s plan is clear, we can decide what the next steps will be.
